Summer Wildlife Management Checklist
by Kent Kammermeyer, QDMA

About six years ago, forage specialist Roy Deason and I hatched up an idea to publish a 3-year calendar with a month-by-month checklist of wildlife management activities. This publication was called the Wild Game Pocket Planner. It would easily fit in your back pocket, the dash of a pickup truck, or any other nook and cranny. The first one began in 1998 and was a joint venture between Pennington Seed Company and Georgia Department of Natural Resources, Wildlife Resources Division and the second one was continued exclusively by Pennington, expiring in 2002.

Mixing Grasses and Clovers Benefits Wildlife
Courtesy of the National Wild Turkey Federation

Grasses and clovers are good plants to use in your wildlife openings and are especially important to wild turkeys. They offer excellent foraging and brood habitat for adult wild turkeys and turkey poults. These plants produce a large amount of seeds, which benefit mature birds, and attract hordes of insects, the essential element of a young turkey's diet. Additionally, grasses and clovers help control erosion when planted on roads, logging decks and fallow fields. According to NWTF wildlife biologists, there are two main groups of grasses and clovers: warm-season, which are planted in the spring, and cool-season, which are planted in the fall. Species in the warm-season group include bahia grass, Bermuda grass, orchard grass, Timothy and alyce clover. The cool-season plants include Kentucky bluegrass, Canada wild rye, rye grass, and most clovers.

Summer Nutrition
Kip Adams, QDMA Director of Education & Outreach

All deer managers realize that deer have critical nutrient requirements in autumn. Bucks are gearing up for the rut and does and fawns are adding fat for winter. While autumn nutrition is important, spring and summer nutritional needs should not be overlooked. Spring and summer are critical times for body growth, antler growth, gestation (pregnancy), lactation, fawn development, and fat deposition. Managers must understand these seasonal requirements and tailor their nutritional programs to meet these needs.

Rye (Secale cereale)
by Kent Kammermeyer - Senior Wildlife Biologist
Pennington Seed

Rye is grown in every state in the United States, often when conditions are unfavorable for wheat including tough erosion control scenarios. It is the most popular of the small grains for cattle forage and is the most cold tolerant cereal grain and wildlife planting in the whole country! Rye is more cold tolerant than oats or wheat and also tolerates low fertility and acid soil more than any other small grain. Consequently, rye can be grown in a wider range of environmental conditions than any other small grain. Do not confuse cereal rye (rye grain) with annual or perennial ryegrass, they are totally different plants! {Read Full Article}

An Ecological Argument for Hunting
by Dr. R. Larry Marchinton and Dr. Karl V. Miller, QDMA

There are those of us who prefer to live the life of the hunter/gatherer-taking at least some of our sustenance in the natural way our ancestors did over the 100,000 years prior to the agricultural and industrial revolutions. Is this wrong? Is this something to be discouraged in our modern society? We do not think so.

At current harvest rates, use of the renewable products of natural plant and animal communities is much less damaging to the ecosystem than it would be to change these natural communities into agricultural fields or factories to produce the food we need. In the United States roughly 3 million white-tailed deer are harvested each year from a still-growing population of approximately 19 million. This translates to about 150 million pounds of meat.
